About us The Urban Collaborative, LLC has completed master plans for more than $1 billion in construction at sites across the world. Through our process, we have been able to prepare programs and conceptual designs for communities, military bases, churches, schools, and transit agencies. Projects include concept designs for religious education and office buildings, urban design plans for mixed-use transit villages, and master plans for entire communities. We specialize in the preparation of programs, master plans, and conceptual designs for a wide array of clients including: Principal Mark Gillem, an architect and planner with extensive project experience in both the public and private sectors, has developed master plans for nearly $1 billion in capital improvements worldwide. His work includes plans for sites across the United States as well as in Japan, Italy, and several developing countries. In Ohio, he designed the state’s first neo-traditional development, Wright Cycle Estates, located east of Dayton. In Xenia, he designed the master plan for the reuse of the historic Ohio Veterans Children’s Home. And at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, he designed the award-winning comprehensive plan for the installation. Several years ago, he worked with residents in Medina County to conduct a Built Environment Rating for that county. Gillem also has extensive experience teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He was an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Planning at the U.S. Air Force’s graduate school in Dayton, Ohio, and he has taught courses in urban design and professional practice at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Oregon's School of Architecture. He has published nearly 20 articles and has given numerous public lectures on planning and design issues. Gillem’s research and teaching focuses on the processes, players, and politics involved in the making of urban space. As an instructor, he teaches studios and seminars in urban design. As a researcher, he uses qualitative and quantitative methods to uncover the relationship between institutions and the production of space. As an active practitioner, he participates in the making of places. Gillem is a licensed planner and architect, a member of the American Institute of Architects, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He has a PhD in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley; a Masters in Architecture also from Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kansas. Gillem currently holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at The University of Oregon. Contact us at 1.510.551.8065 for more information.
